Herringthorpe Infant School
Foundation Crest Star Award
Foundation Crest Awards
Our school was lucky enough to be chosen as part of the Star Awards pilot for 3-7 year olds. We have been running this as a club for Foundation children and they have been really enjoying our sessions. Once they have completed all six sessions they will receive their awards.
Session 1 - In this session we had to investigate what would be the best material to fix a broken umbrella. We worked as teams to carry out our experiments and then we sorted the materials into waterproof and not waterproof.
Session 2 - Our next session was called Peggy Problem. The children had to work together to find the strongest clothes peg by testing them with rocks in a sock. We had to number the rocks and put them in the same order to make sure it was fair. We found that the wooden clothes peg with a spring was the strongest!
Session 3 - In this session we thought about how we could be seen and be safe at night time. We tested different materials in the dark to find out if they were reflective or not. We then investigated our own coats and book bags and found that lots of them had reflective stripes! Well done everyone!
Session 4 - This session was called Animal Adventures! We explored our outdoor environment to search for minibeasts and we looked at them carefully using our special kit bags. We then ticked off what we saw. We all really enjoyed this session!
Session 5 - In this week's Crest Award club we have been testing timers by making our own sand timers. We experimented with different sized holes in the cups and talked about how long the sand took to get through the holes. We found out that the bigger holes took less time to get through than the smaller holes. We used lots of problem solving and teamwork to try and make a sand timer which lasted for a minute.
